Over 50 New AEDs donated to urban and rural communities

On November 17, HSF teamed up with the City of Winnipeg to announce the placement of over 50 new AEDs in rural and urban communities across Manitoba. The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s donation of 24 AEDs (valued at more than $3,000 each) was made possible through the support of national sponsors Boston Pizza Foundation and The Cowan Foundation. Both sponsors have championed the HSF national Heart&Stroke Restart a Heart, Restart a Life™ Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program

The Randy Shippam Invitational

Scott Shippam of Shippam and Associates presented a cheque to the Foundation for over $15,000 on October 4, 2011. The funds were raised through a golf tournament in memory of Scott’s brother Randy who died at age 41 of a heart attack. The Foundation has been the tournament's charity of choice over the past 2 years and advised they will continue with the event again in 2012. We thank Scott and all of those who participated in helping raise these funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and in support of the work that we do.

AED Sponsorship:
A $1 million contribution to the Heart&Stroke Restart a Heart, Restart a Life™ national Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program by the Boston Pizza Foundation made the placement of 10 AEDs in Manitoba possible. The entire $1 million contribution supports the allocation, training and installation of 200 AEDs across the country over the next five years. They are being placed in public places such as community centres, sports arenas, and shopping malls. Criteria for determining community areas most in need include emergency response times, the potential of higher incidence of sudden cardiac arrests in large public spaces, and local readiness to support a public access defibrillator program.
The AEDs were placed in Winnipeg at Creative Retirement, Perimeter Aviation, The Golf Dome, and Hope Centre Health Care; in Portage la Prairie at William Glesby Centre; in Selkirk at St. Andrews Recreation Centre; in Morden at Morden Friendship & Senior Services Activity Centre; in Brandon at Brandon University Athletic Department; and in Thompson at Norplex Pool. In the first year, training and equipment will be provided. Six to eight trained personnel will be available at each AED location to assist someone who is having a cardiac arrest.
