PowerSkills - HeartSmart™ Family Activities!This program has been created to provide elementary teachers like you with a classroom resource which promotes participation in a range of physical activities, while meeting cirriculum expectations. Learning the basic skills of sport or play is an important factor in children's participation in sports and physical activities. Children who are confident with their skills actively participate in activities, while those who are self-conscious of their lack of ability often site on the sidelines. This curriculum supportive program fosters interest in physical activity and enables students to develop and build confidence in their skills. PowerSkills include five separate activity sheets that can be used throughout the school year. The Great Games activities teach students some basic skills and strategies that enable them to play the game 'smart'. To spark the interest of students that do not enjoy traditional sports and activities, we included outdoor adventures, theatre and fun group challenges and games that show how physical activity can be fun for everyone. The grade level does not appear on the student sheets, so you can mix and match activities from different PowerSkills grades at your own discretion. We suggest that you photocopy the activity sheets, review them with your class and then send them home for the students to enjoy with their family and friends. After a few weeks, your students can return their completed activity sheets and share with you their learning experiences. We hope that you enjoy using this program and are excited to get started.
